DPM-FAQSeries Topic 3: Which standard should we refer to for Drill Pipes and HWDP?

New Drill Pipes and HWDP

For New Drill Pipe specification, the most commonly referred to standard is API Specification 5DP. DP-Master also manufactures Drill Pipe in accordance to NS-1™ Standard as well as Standard DS-1® Volume 1 (both standard and critical levels).

For New HWDP specification, the API Specification for Rotary Drill Stem Elements (ANSI/API SPECIFICATION 7-1) is referred. Additional details are also specified in NS-1™ Standard as well as Standard DS-1® Volume 1 for standard level and critical levels.

Standard DS-1® Volume 1 outlines and categorize criteria into 2 levels – Standard Level and Critical Level.

API RP 7G (Recommended Practise for Drill Stem Design and Operating Limits) is also commonly referred to for both Drill Pipes and HWDP but not used as a manufacturing standard.

Used Drill Pipes and HWDP

For Used Drill Pipes and HWDP, users can refer to Recommended Practice for Inspection and Classification of Used Drill Stem Elements, API RP 7G-2, NS-2™ Standard or Standard DS-1® Volume 3.

Standard DS-1® Volume 3 outlines and categorizes inspection criteria into categories – From Cat-1 Inspection up to Cat-5 Inspection. These inspection criteria are suitable for used pipe inspection and do not apply to new manufacture.
